Port of Newcastle starts container business
The Port of Newcastle is the world’s largest coal export port and the largest deepwater port on the east coast of Australia. Recently port of Newcastle commissioned two mobile harbour cranes to promote the diversification and sustainable development of the port’s business.
The Port of Newcastle has previously disclosed plans to develop a highly automated container terminal – the Newcastle Deepwater Container Terminal (NDCT). The terminal will be directly connected to the railway and will be able to pass 1.8 km long freight trains with a designed throughput capacity of 2 million TEU per year. According to reports from relevant agencies, transporting goods from adjacent areas through the terminal, rather than transshipping through Sydney or Brisbane ports, saves AUD 586 per TEU.
The two cranes will also enter the final commissioning phase as construction work on the terminal progresses and will begin handling general cargo and containers in September.
