Khalifa Port Expansion
Abu Dhabi Ports has announced plans to expand Khalifa Port container terminal by adding a 1,000-metre quay wall and to deepen the port’s channel and basin to 18 meters, which intended to increase Khalifa Port’s annual capacity from 2.5 million to 15 million TEUs and from 12 million to 35 million tonnes of general cargo by 2030.
That project commenced in the late 2000s, based on a patented Open Cell Sheet Pile design. It was abandoned in 2010, following de-clutching of its sheet piles; unanticipated re-phasing to accommodate ongoing operations and the silting-up of existing berths as a result of the expansion works. In 2011, Alaska News reported that the project’s completion date had slipped by 10 years and its estimated cost had risen from US$360 million to US$1 billion.
If successful, this project will not only add welcome capacity to Khalifa Port but also provide much-needed tendering opportunities for contractors operating in a depressed construction market.
