Germany’s first LNG terminal
Germany’s first terminal for receiving LNG was completed in Wilhelmshaven in the North Sea’s Jade Bay in November last year, and natural gas was delivered to Germany through a leased floating storage and regasification unit in December last year. The pier is not a permanent gas-receiving pier, but rather a modification of an existing pier to be able to receive natural gas from floating storage and regasification units.
In order to import liquefied natural gas, the German government spent 3 billion euros to lease four mobile natural gas receiving ships, namely floating storage and regasification units. The ships have the technology to store natural gas in liquid form and pump it back into the pipeline as a gas. It is reported that the terminal will meet 6% of Germany’s natural gas demand every year.
