East Tawas State Dock replacement project in limbo
A $2.6 million project nearly 10 years will replace the East Tawas State Dock in limbo after contract renegotiations broke down a month ago.
If the state can’t find a replacement contractor to do the dredge and electrical work within the next three weeks, the project may be revoked until further notice. If the state finds a contractor within the next three weeks, the estimated completion date for the project is this fall.
The current docks is located at 113 Newman St., East Tawas. The replacement project setback will not affect boater and pedestrian access, but the nearby parking lot will be closed in half.
When the first-phase contractor, Bay City’s MKC Group Inc., pulled up high volumes of wood product in their dredging, complications with the project arose. The contractor requests more funds than the state’s budget for the project allowed.
The improvements the project would bring — including floating docks that counter rising and falling water levels and dredged shorelines that allow boats easier access. Besides, it can also promote the development of Tourism.
