Changes after the revision of the ISO standard for pneumatic fenders
Date:2023-04-19
Pneumatic fender is a new product of ship fender. It is hung on the side of the ship or the dock, and when the ship to ship or the ship to dock, it absorbs the impact energy and reduces the damage to the hull or the dock.
The first pneumatic fender standard of the ISO was promulgated in 2002, the standard number is ISO 17357, and the standard name is Ships and Marine Technology – High-pressure Floating Pneumatic Rubber Fenders. This standard was revised by ISO and a new revised standard was published in 2014. The differences between the old and new standards are now summarized.
The biggest difference is that the original standard is divided into two parts, namely: the high-pressure part and the low-pressure part. The standard numbers are ISO 17357-1 and ISO 17357-2, the two parts added together to supersede ISO 17357:2002.
- High pressure
The high-pressure part refers to the pneumatic rubber fender with an initial internal pressure of 50 kPa and above. There are two specifications for the initial internal pressure specified in the standard, namely 50 kPa and 80 kPa.
The new standard for high-pressure pneumatic fenders adds a new type on the basis of the original two types, called single-ended Type I, which is a sheath type without flange openings and metal parts at one end. When installing this type of pneumatic fender, place the end without the flange opening where excessive compression is expected. Because the pneumatic fender at the front end will produce angular compression when the two ships are close together. At this time, the end with metal parts will be damaged when excessive compression occurs. Therefore, this new type of single-end without metal parts has been added to the new standard.
- Low pressure
The content of the low pressure part is newly added in this revision. The so-called low pressure is relative to the high pressure. Unless otherwise specified, the initial internal pressure of the low-pressure pneumatic rubber fender is 7 kPa. Due to the low pressure, the wall of the ball is thinner and the corresponding absorbed energy is lower.
The low-pressure pneumatic fender has been developed in recent years. It is a light structure and is widely used in occasions where the distance between the ship and the wharf is relatively large and the energy absorption required is low.
